Riding at the forefront of the new wave of electronic producers coming out of Australia is Sydney-based producer Kilter. With tropically-infused, percussion-laden beats and a swag of highly-acclaimed original tracks and remixes, it is no surprise he has seen a loyal fan base build over the last couple of years.

Kilter's infectious and atmospheric sounds have been driving people to the dance floor, but it is his live show that keeps them dancing and sets the electronic whiz kid apart. Be it tearing up small sweaty clubs or sprawling festival fields, Kilter has become a seasoned performer in his short career, with his energy and enthusiasm on display during his live sets.

2014 saw Kilter hit the road supporting RÜFÜS, The Kite String Tangle and Art vs Science, plus huge festival appearances at Splendour in the Grass, the national tour for Listen Out, Field Day and the Big Day Out, and his own national 28 date headline tour around the release of his 'Shades' EP.

2015 has started with a bang, seeing remixes for heavyweights ODESZA & Hermitude drop, as well as his collaboration with GRMM 'Look At Me' - a blissed out beats bomb with some weighty vocals from The Cayman Island's Yung Fusion - cracking 200,000 spins on Soundcloud in two weeks!

With an exciting new collaboration with up-and-comers Porsches as well as having just announced an upcoming headline show for Vivid Sydney, we grabbed Ned for a chat about all things Kilter.

Hey Ned, thanks for having a chat today! Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? How did you first get into making music?

I started hitting pots and pans when I first started to walk and upgraded to drum kit in early primary school. Piano came next and towards the end of high school I started mucking around in loop based music production software Sony Acid.

How would you describe the genre of music you make?

It's not entirely genre specific but most of it is fairly upbeat and danceable.

Over time, who or what do you think have been your main inspirations and influencers musically?

World music, Hudson Mohawke, Jai Paul, Basement Jaxx, J Dilla, Major Lazer to name a few.

Your live performances are always full of energy; do you feel this is an important part of what you do? Is this something you work on a lot?

100%. I think live performances are one of the best ways to win a crowd over to your music. If you kill it on stage and have fun while you do it they will have fun watching you. I think my live show is a strong part of what I do and I am constantly trying to find ways to spend all my money improving/adding to it haha.

When you've got a little bit of spare time (which we don't imagine happens much!), what are your hobbies outside of music?

I like eating good food and exploring places. Also sleeping a lot.

If you had to name three favourite shows you've played, what would they be and why?

Falls Lorne NYE 2014 for the crazy gig, selling out Oxford Arts Factory twice last year which was something I never thought I would do if you asked me a year or two back and probably Splendour for the bulk crew hangs.

We've loved your tracks featuring the likes of YOUTH, Tkay Maidza and most recently with fellow Sydneysider GRMM! Any other upcoming collabs we should know about?

My new one 'Want 2' with the silky smooth horse riders Porsches.

You've recently been announced as a headliner for the etcetc showcase at Vivid Sydney this year! That should be pretty special, are you looking forward to that?

Yeah this should be a great show. Vivid is very cool and I think they are doing up the Basement to be crazy and colourful too.

Top 3 tracks you're loving listening to right now?

BenZel — Stuck On You ft. Tory Lanez

Hopium - Right Now

Ganz - Dino War

You've been on support duties recently for sell out shows with Carmada, any plans for a Kilter tour anytime soon?

After a few months of writing new music and recovery (thank you LDRU and Yahtzel) sure.

And last but not least, Pizza, Burgers or Burritos?

Burgers. Anything and everything tastes better in between bread.

Catch Kilter at the etcetc x VIVID MUSIC showcase, which also features Paces, Set Mo, GodWolf, Acaddamy + special guests, June 7th at The Basement, Circular Quay. Find out more and buy tickets here.
